The time has come to add the next biography of one of my characters. I hope you enjoy!
Quote: | There are several well-known leaders and captains throughout the history of Middle-Earth. Many of them were (or became) kings and princes – a title well deserved for their role or due to their bloodlines. Still, there are many others who serve the cause against Sauron who receive no special acclaim.
As you may recall, the Numenorans employed a secret guard specifically to protect the White Tree, Nimloth, and its descendents. It was said that the fate of this special tree was tied to the fate of the Numenoran kings. Therefore, it was equally important to provide protection for the tree(s) to preserve them as a symbol of the divine authority given to the king(s). In the biography of Dagranhad, I told you the story of the “Assassins of the White Tree” who were tasked with being a more pro-active defense against the evil forces who would seek to destroy the line of kings, if they could. Now, it is time to tell the story of the “Guards of the White Tree” – the ones tasked with more directly defending the tree [and occasionally the king].
The Guards of the White Tree (GWT) were a special breed of soldier. They did not wax or wane with the passage of time. Not even the death of Isildur and the long absence of a king from Gondor kept the GWT from fulfilling their task. Now, you would be mistaken if you thought that they merely protected the signature tree planted at the top of Minas Tirith. By decree of the first Numenoran kings, only a Guard of the White Tree could be chosen for any significant leadership position within the Numenoran military. Often times, the GWT would be selected to fill the ranks of Captains, Commanders, and (when necessary) Generals who had the authority to act in the stead of the king concerning military affairs.
The years have passed and the Guards of the White Tree continue their duty without fail. Many of them can be seen where you would expect them to be. However, in these days, you can frequently find them working abroad. Despite his initial distain for Aragorn, Boromir and his brother (Faromir) knew that their father had become too arrogant (and complacent) in his stewardship of Gondor. They knew that the time was coming for the heir of Isildur to come forth and reclaim the throne, thus, restoring Gondor’s glory. To this end, they commanded that some members of the Guards of the White Tree should be sent forth into Eriador. The task of the GWT members was to aid the Free Peoples so that Aragorn would be free to travel abroad and aid Gandalf without feeling guilty about temporarily leaving his post as leader of the Dunedain.
Golladhar is a current member of the Guards of the White Tree. He was assigned to aid Dagranhad in his tasks as the regional leader of the Assassins of the White Tree. Golladhar wields a Halberd said to have been blessed by Elendil, himself, saying: “Let this weapon be a beacon of hope when it is found in the hands of a Captain worthy of his rank.” |
